13. Jumper by Steven C. Gould

Jumper by Steven C. Gould
ISBN: 0765357690
Tor Science Fiction, New York, 2008
352 pages

Teaser: Seventeen year old Davey discovers that he has the ability to jump or teleport from one place to another. Not just feet, but thousands of miles away.

Summary: Davey "jumps" spontaneously using only his mind in order to escape dangers, particularly his abusive father. Davey was finally pushed to the limits and needed to get out fast. Davey finds himself coming of age and using less than ethical means to gain control of his destiny and self gain. A search for his long lost mother also proves to start an adventure in romance. Davey’s ethics in use of his new skills allow them to live in luxury in New York and then colliding with the law after a bank robbery. Davey finds himself torn between his ability to jump out of his criminal situations and staying with the girl of his dreams and the search for his mother. Then the real test, there are consequences for his out of control behavior.

Evaluation: I think this was a cute book. It allows the readers to imagine popping out of trouble and landing in new adventures with each jump. I think it would be a great book for younger readers and invite imagination and adventures.

Challenge issues and age recommendation: Abusive parenting, romantic desires, run away behavior , defiance of authority figures and police. I would recommend this book for readers 12 and up.
